Not much going on the in the world of TV this week. We’ll keep it short, I actually have books I want to read. (Gasp!)

  • Jill Scott gave birth to her first baby, a boy named Jett. Adorbs! Speaking of Jill Scott, I’m still loving No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. In fact, I went to the library today to check out the first book in the series the show is based off of.
  • Guess who got a reality show? Rudy! Not the football playing one, the Cosby one.
  • And my favorite non-TV related link of the week: Neil Gaiman writes absolutely wonderful children’s books (he wrote Coraline, FYI). This video is an animation of his latest effort, Blueberry Girl. It’s a pretty magical picture book and the video makes me smile. It’s inspiring and whimsical and I plan on buying it for every friend, relative, etc who gives birth to a baby girl in the next 20 years.

Hey peeps. Lots to write about and just when I think I don’t have time to do it all, I remember my dear old friend Hump Day Update.

  • Who Wants To Be A Millionaire got a serious makeover for its season premiere this week. There’s a time limit on the questions, new crazy life lines, and help from celebrity experts. I use the term celebrity loosely as so far the only celebrity has been Bill Nye the Science Guy, though he is is 2 for 2. It speeds up the show and that time limit makes you second guess yourself on even the easiest questions. I know what you’re all thinking, “How long is the time-limit for the million dollar question?” It’s 45 seconds plus all of the time you bank during the other questions. So if you only use 5 seconds during a 30 second time period, 25 seconds goes to the bank. Neat huh?
  • Ellen Degeneres is the new spokesperson for Cover Girl. I don’t wear make-up but I appreciate the fact Cover Girl uses funny, vibrant, down-to-earth celebs like Queen Latifah and Ellen for their ad campaigns. Classy.
  • Michael Phelps is hosting SNL this week. Anyone see him totally bonk before he introduced Little Wayne at the VMAs? Hopefully he can hold it together on Saturday.

As some of you know, I am in the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire contestant pool. This means that at any moment in time the good folks at WWTBAM can call me up and tell me I’m on the show.

I’ve been in the pool for two years now and the initial anticipation of that call has worn off. I hadn’t thought about the show in ages but yesterday I got an e-mail.

…You should begin to prepare yourself for the possibility of being a Contestant by gathering photos either electronically or physically of the people you would like to serve as your Phone-A-Friend.”

This e-mail could mean positively nothing but it got me thinking; what goes into making a good phone-a-friend. Do I need to go outside of my friend circle and seek experts? Or do I stick with my more qualified friends since they’re trustworthy and internet savvy?

And then there’s the issue of categories. My trivia base covers TV (duh), recent movies, song lyrics, current events and throwaway facts. This means I need to cover religion, history, science, sports, literature, old movies and general trivia between my five Phone-A-Friends. It’s like a mind-boggling Sudoku puzzle; I just can’t get the pieces to fit.

Lucky for me, I don’t really have to…yet.
