I liked it. The live audience threw me off a bit though, since 30 Rock is usually sans laugh track. It wasn’t the funniest episode of all time, but I appreciated the effort and the special little “live-items” they did to set it apart from a typical broadcast, and it was nice to see Matt Damon and Jon Hamm reprising their role as Liz’s surprisingly-hot-for-someone-so-awkward boyfriends.

It still didn’t hold a candle to the live episode of ER. Anyone else remember that? Historic. They were watching a baseball game in the episode people! A baseball game! (Sidenote: The NY Times hated that episode, but haters to the left. I loved it.)

Oh jees. The day after Valentine’s Day edition.

  • Alec Baldwin: His storyline on 30 Rock was sharp yet adorable this week, he made fun of  Joaquin Phoenix on Conan (sidenote: Joaquin Phoenix is officially batshit nuts now but I sort of like the beard.)  and he made me chuckle during his millionith time hosting SNL last night. Three cheers for you Alec!
  • Blink 182: They’re reuniting! The teenager in me is singing! Actually she’s probably yelling at her parents and retreating to her room to journal and complain about how nobody understands. Either way: Bring on the tour!
  • Jon Hamm/Jennifer Westfeldt: They’re good looking, they’ve been dating forever and they’re having the best Sweeps of all time. Hamm is doing an arc on 30 Rock and Westfeldt is the pregnant woman with some brain issues the Grey’s Anatomy/Private Practice crossover event. Both guest appearances are really well done so far, very organic like they’ve been there for years. It’s a shame the shows are competing for eyeballs.

Hip-hip hooray, time to get going. My online jeopardy audition is in 40 minutes.

  • Speaking of long-running game shows, Pat Sajak is kind of repulsed by the gay couple in this clip of Wheel of Fortune.  I am now repulsed by Pat Sajak.
  • Nancy Cartwright, the voice-talent behind Bart Simpson, has been using her Bart voice to promote Scientology events. That’s probably not going to go over so well.
  • Connie Britton is one of my new favorite actresses. Dalton Ross talks to her about the new season of Friday Night Lights.
  • I am seriously on the edge of my seat for Jon Hamm on 30 Rock. This clip is tiding me over.
  • This interview with Lauren Graham made me miss Gilmore Girls a little but I’m excited for her new show on ABC.
  • The format of My Life On The D-List is changing. The next season is going to be more like a talk-show. Not sure how I feel about this just yet.
  • My favorite non-TV related link of the week: Giant Inauguration Picture! Zoom in and out, it’s awesome. I think Clarence Thomas is sleeping.

Two interesting news stories today involving Mad Men and NBC.

  • Did you know Jon Hamm auditioned for the role of Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock. With the hair and chiseled face I can almost picture it. He wouldn’t have been as spot on as Alec Baldwin though. We’ll still get to see Hamm and Tina Fey together when he joins the cast for a mulitple episode arc. Best worlds ever…COLLIDING!

Here’s the TV side of the list. Let’s dish.

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
DEXTER (SHOWTIME)
HOUSE (FOX)
IN TREATMENT (HBO)
MAD MEN (AMC)
TRUE BLOOD (HBO)

Thoughts: It’s no secret that I loooove Mad Men. However, Dexter has been pretty amazing this season. Toughie, but I think Mad Men will win again.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TV SERIES – DRAMA
Sally Field (BROTHERS & SISTERS)
Mariska Hargitay (LAW & ORDER: SVU)
January Jones (MAD MEN)
Anna Paquin (TRUE BLOOD)
Kyra Sedgwick (THE CLOSER)

Thoughts: Love these ladies and all of them are contenders. Actually I’m not crazy about Anna Paquin but I think that stems more from my dislike of True Blood. My vote is for January Jones or Sally Field.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TV SERIES – DRAMA
Gabriel Byrne (IN TREATMENT)
Michael C. Hall (DEXTER)
Jon Hamm (MAD MEN)
Hugh Laurie (HOUSE)
Jonathan Rhys Meyers (THE TUDORS)

Thoughts: Michael C. Hall is lovely and amazing but he’s no match for the man and mystery that is Jon Hamm.

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
30 ROCK (NBC)
CALIFORNICATION (SHOWTIME)
ENTOURAGE (HBO)
THE OFFICE (NBC)
WEEDS (SHOWTIME)

Thoughts: Did the Hollywood Foreign Press Association see the same season of Entourage as me? It was dreadful, truly dreadful. Let’s hope 30 Rock or The Office can eek it out, though Weeds was pretty fun this season..except for that whole belt sander thing.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TV SERIES – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Christina Applegate (SAMANTHA WHO?)
America Ferrera (UGLY BETTY)
Tina Fey (30 ROCK)
Debra Messing (THE STARTER WIFE)
Mary-Louise Parker (WEEDS)

Thoughts: Tina Fey took home the little guy last year. I think the only lady in her sights is America Ferrera. UB has been pretty good this year and she’s largely to thank for that.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TV SERIES – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Alec Baldwin (30 ROCK)
Steve Carell (THE OFFICE)
Kevin Connolly (ENTOURAGE)
David Duchovny (CALIFORNICATION)
Tony Shalhoub (MONK)

Thoughts: Nice to see Kevin Connolly get recognized as one of the last remaining bright spots on Entourage. Will he win? I highly doubt it. Clear the stage for Alec Baldwin or David Duchovny.

BEST MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TV
A RAISIN IN THE SUN (ABC)
BERNARD AND DORIS (HBO)
CRANFORD (PBS)
JOHN ADAMS (HBO)
RECOUNT (HBO)

Thoughts: John Adams. ‘Nuff said.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TV
Judi Dench (CRANFORD)
Catherine Keener (AN AMERICAN CRIME)
Laura Linney (JOHN ADAMS)
Shirley MaClaine (COCO CHANEL)
Susan Sarandon (BERNARD AND DORIS)

Thoughts: Judi Dench is the only one giving Laura Linney some competition. This could be a nice competition.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TV
Ralph Fiennes (BERNARD AND DORIS)
Paul Giamatti (JOHN ADAMS)
Kevin Spacey (RECOUNT)
Kiefer Sutherland (24: REDEMPTION)
Tom Wilkinson (RECOUNT)

Thoughts: Love that Kiefer got a nomination for 24: Redemption. Love it! I secretly want him to win, but Paul Giamatti was brilliant and tough to top.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TV
Eileen Atkins (CRANFORD)
Laura Dern (RECOUNT)
Melissa George (IN TREATMENT)
Rachel Griffiths (BROTHERS & SISTERS)
Dianne Wiest (IN TREATMENT)

Thoughts: Tough category since it encompasses everything. Laura Dern may eek this one out.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TV
Neil Patrick Harris (HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER)
Denis Leary (RECOUNT)
Jeremy Piven (ENTOURAGE)
Blair Underwood (IN TREATMENT)
Tom Wilkinson (JOHN ADAMS)

Thoughts: I’m rooting really hard for Neil Patrick Harris but odds are Piven or Tom Wilkinson will come out on top.

Who are you liking for the awards folks? Anyone missing? Think the HFPA totally missed the boat? Let ‘er rip.

Pizza high edition.

  • Fran Drescher wants to be a serious contender for the vacant junior Senator seat in New York. Seriously? No really, seriously? This just in: If you have to tell people you’re not joking, your odds of being selected aren’t too good.
  • Want a great way to kick off 2009? How about Hollywood shutting down…again. If SAG can’t come to a deal and 75% of their 120,000 members vote to strike, we’ll lose another great year of TV. Hope for the best but expect the worst.
  • And straight our of my “People’s Kinks Will Never Surprise Me” file: Simpson’s porn. Don’t worry, the link is just a link to an article, not the hardcore stuff in question.
  • Paula Abdul hasn’t slept at her house since a fan shot and killed herself in front of her home. Abdul is trying to sell the home but given the economy and the fact someone died near the front drive, it may be a tough sell.
  • Loved the new SNL digital short. It’s one of the catchiest songs since Umbrella. Downside: It made for a very awkward Daddy/Daughter SNL time.
  • And finally, my favorite non-TV related site of the week: Bus Sign Generator! It’s the simple pleasures.
