I’m back from Florida. It’s hard to come back from vacation but I’m amped to come back on a Wednesday. Let the updates begin.

  • And finally, my favorite Non-TV related Link of the Week: AHHHH! Ugly Cat! Seriously scary!

A lot of folks, myself included, watch TV as a form of escape from the ho-hum factor of their everyday lives. TV-living involves more explosions, more love scenes, better apartments and higher salaries. Why not seek solace in the unrealistic?

Today I thought about some of my favorite unrealistic TV couples. Now don’t get me wrong, there’s no love lost between me and these characters, I am simply commenting on the at-times ridiculous nature of their relationships. Others made the list because frankly, I don’t really see them working well together in non-diagetic life.

  • Marshall & Lily, How I Met Your Mother: These two are too so twee it’s painful. Their adorable, overly affectionate, have awesome nicknames for each other (Marshmallow & Lilypad, sigh) and even perform outrageous gestures for each other. (Anyone see this week’s episode? A marching band at the airport? Really?) Their break-up in season 2 was borderline difficult to watch but it made the make-up that much sweeter. Totally unrealistic, but still enviable.

  • Jim & Pam, The Office: This one is a given. Jim pined for Pam for years and I lapped up every second of it. From remembering her favorite yogurt (Mixed Berry) and making her grilled cheese sandwiches, to proposing in the rain and buying his lady love his parents’ house. What pushed this couple over the sugar coated edge? The all day hidden Bluetooth convo.

  • Lois & Peter, Family Guy: Big guy, tiny wife is an age old TV combination (See: The King of Queens, Still Standing, According To Jim) Big, annoying, kind of abusive, inconsiderate guy, tiny wife is a newer one. Yes, I know, Family Guy is animated and also extremely far fetched (once the dog talked all bets were off) but they’re still a pretty ridic couple don’t you think? It makes for pretty funny TV though.

I have a few more for your consideration (Lorelai & Chris, Gilmore Girls, Niles & Maris, Frasier) but won’t bore you with the deets. Any two-somes you’d like to add to the list? For Valentine’s Day we should put together a realistic couple list, put in your votes now.

Its been awhile since we had a big TV weekend hasn’t it? It’s snowy here so the timing is perfect. A little sledding, a little hot chocolate and then hunkering down for the night with some big TV. Here’s what I’m watching:

Tonight: This one is probably only relevant to the fellow Sconnies who read edubTV but a family from Evansville is featured on tonight’s episode of Supernanny. It shook things up in the tiny little town and I am excited to see how the family and Wisconsin gets represented. We looked pretty awesome on Extreme Makeover Home Edition but then again who doesn’t? And for those of you with a Wisconsin connection (who also kind of hate yourselves), Howie Do It premieres tonight.

Saturday: Neil Patrick Harris is hosting the first SNL after the “winter break.” He can sing, he can dance, he’s hilarious, and he’s easy on the eyes. It’s going to be legen…wait for it…dary. Plus I could really use an NPH fix. I’m going through some serious withdrawl following my HIMYM marathon last week.

Sunday: The Golden Globes! Fancy clothes, drunken celebrities, awards for TV and Film? What a lovely way to spend a Sunday evening. In a GG pool? You can check out my TV picks from a few weeks ago.  Hopefully I do better than I did for my Emmy pool. That was a little embarassing.

So I know I already made my New Year’s Blogolutions, however, I have a whole separate list I would like to bring to your attention: Shows I Want To Start Watching.

Yes, I watch a lot of television but there are some programs I just haven’t given enough time to. I just wrapped up watching the first three seasons of How I Met Your Mother and it was fab. I’d watched the show occasionally before I’m glad I finally devoted the time to catching up.

I think I can fit new programs in my schedule if I cut out some of the crap. Do I need to watch every episode of Gilmore Girls my Tivo records as a suggestion? Probably not. Why am I watching a Made/True Life hybrid episode right now? Beats me. Most of the shows on the list below have received some good reviews and for one reason or another I never got around to giving them a fair shake.

  • Friday Night Lights
  • Damages
  • Gossip Girl
  • The Wire – Yes, fine, I will try to finish the first season.

I think that’s a good start. Anyone else have any other suggestions/DVDs I can borrow? I may need to sign up for Netflix again, a small price to pay for finding my new favorites. I’ll keep all of you posted on the journey. And hey, easy on the spoilers folks.

Howdy Ho! This week was a snap.

Marry: Jason Segel

I took a vacay all last week and I spent a majority of my time truly relaxing. To that end, I watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I’m knee deep into How I Met Your Mother on DVD. I started with season 1 on Friday and I’m already on the last disc of season 2. Segel shines on the silver and small screen and it’s made my vacation pretty awesome. He seems like a really genuine and funny guy. Plus he plays the piano and wants to bring back the Muppets. Love, love, love. The only sour note? He may be dating Drew Barrymore. PS: Why haven’t Segel and Michael Cera ever been cast as brothers?

Bop: John Adams

My love for HBO’s John Adams is no secret but I re-watched the first three installments with the family over the weekend and it…was…AWESOME. Haven’t seen it yet? Watch it chumps!

Kill: The Old Doc’s Returning For The Final Season of ER

I will miss ER. I used to be a pretty big fan and I’ve watched some of the episodes this season. But let it be known, not every single doctor (dead or alive?!) whos ever worked at County needs to come back to say goodbye. Case in point, no one needs to “bump into” Dr. Corday. Nobody.

Anyone catch these pictures cast of How I Met Your Mother re-creating some of the year’s best moments in pop culture in Entertainment Weekly? It’s to die for. These only further confirm my undying love for Neil Patrick Harris. You can check out all of the photos right here.

Speaking of which, NPH is hosting SNL come January 10. It’s going to be lovely and amazing…and I bet they’ll be singing involved.

This is a race against my computer battery dying. TV updates: Go, Go, Go!

  • The ladies on How I Met Your Mother are preggers. First Alyson Hannigan got knocked up and now Colbie Smulders is with child. They’re probably not writing either pregnancy into the show which means Robin and Lily will be holding a lot of giant purses this season.
  • This sketch would’ve made last week’s SNL hilarious…too bad they cut it. I don’t blame them though, I too live in fear of Rahmbo.
  • Get me on the first flight to LA so I can watch The Mad Men Revue. It’s the supporting cast of Mad Men performing cabaret songs. My heart is aflutter.
  • I’m pretty sure someone in The Fray is sleeping with someone at ABC. First they pretty much rand the music department over at Grey’s and now they’re taking over the new trailer for LOST.
  • Angela Lansbury. Not only is the old broad still alive, but she’s buying poems for homeless vets in grocery store parking lots.
  • And finally, since I’ve been rocking this album all week my favorite non-TV related site of the week: Anywhere you can watch the new Kanye West video. It’s pretty flippin’ gorgeous.
