Arrested Development ruined me. Since that show was prematurely ripped from the airwaves, I’ve started to assume that every show with a dash of creativity and quirk won’t make it very far, especially on network TV (See: Better off Ted, Pushing Daisies, Worst Week). Nothing gold can stay, and if it’s really gold, it will be gone way before its time.

Mr. Sunshine is a living, breathing example of this. But I hope I’m wrong this time.

Haven’t heard about this little gem? It’s a surprisingly good single-camera comedy about a 40-year-old guy (think Will in About A Boy) who’s in charge of operations at a medium sized catch-all arena in San Diego (think Circuses, Motocross, semi-pro hockey).

It’s not too smart for the room but it doesn’t need a laugh track and prop gags to keep it going (I’m looking at you Two & A Half Men). The tone reminded me a bit of Scrubs but without the voiceovers and some of the schlock. It’s packing some serious star power with leads Matthew Perry and Allison Janney and it’s got a premise that could effectively run forever.  Plus the writing is sharp, and particularly irreverent. *Yep, that’s a quote from the pilot.

Ratings wise, the show got some help from a Modern Family lead in last night so hopefully people will make a habit of sticking around.

Catch it now before you’re watching it on Netflix, sobbing and asking, “WHY VIEWING PUBLIC? WHY?”

Next chance to watch: Wednesday, February 16 9:30/8:30C  And while you’re at it, go Hulu the pilot.

So, What Did I Miss?

Its been awhile huh? Since we left off, a lot has happened, new jobs, new cities, but only one new episode of Eastbound & Down. Impressive.

We’re making a triumphant return to edubTV, because…well…we have time on our hands. Why not use it laying on the couch, catching up with our very favorite medium?

To refresh myself and mentally prepare for blogging again, I read about 650 edubTV posts. (I told you, I have time on my hands.) And since it’s been almost a year and a half since we last wrote, they were kind of hilarious. I did notice a few things I got right, and not so right.

So its been 17 months, but I’m happy to be back. I have a few things to say, and finally, finally, five of you will be back to hear them.

Good to see you again too!

It’s unfair to compare siblings to each other, but it’s difficult almost inevitable when  reviewing Mitchell Hurwitz’ two babies. Hurwitz is the brains behind Arrested Development and Fox’s latest Sunday night offering, Sit Down, Shut Up, an animated look at the lives of teachers at a Florida high school, which premiered last night.

The comparison’s to AD are numerous in nature. Both shows ran on Fox Sunday nights, both feature the talent of Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Henry Winkler and finally both are probably too ridiculous and smart for their own good.

Sit Down, Shut Up is to high school what Reno 911 is to the police officers; you know that’s not what it’s really life, but part of you can’t help but wonder if it’s close. The fictional Knob Haven High School has pervy German teachers, a take no-prisoners Principal (last name Sezno) an overly religious science teacher, and a other wacky characters too absurd for words. The cast is a mix of AD favorites and SNL folks including Cheri Oteri, Will Forte, and Kenan Thompson.

The humor is a bit different than the typical Animation Domination block. There are jokes that break the 4th estate, extremely dry quips, and names involving puns. It’s truly the “thinking man’s cartoon,” something you’d be more likely to find on Adult Swim as opposed to Fox.

Speaking of which, If it’s true that the medium is the message, than this program may be lost in translation for lots of folks. Not only is it animated, but it’s cartoons mixed with live-action backgrounds. It’s a lot to absorb for adults not used to this style. People may focus too much attention on the animation itself as opposed to the witty dialogue.

I’m definitely planning on watching Sit Down, Shut Up again. I laughed out loud more than once and it’s one of the better new comedies I’ve seen this season. It will still take some getting used to, and it’s no Arrested Development, but maybe that means it will stick around for awhile.

The one day late edition. I’m in Florida. The weather is nice. Time flies by. I have 969 unread articles in my Google Reader and I only missed one day.  Needless to say, this will probably be the shortest, untimeliest, HDU. My apologies.

  • Guess who won Top Chef? Stupid, stupid, Casey! I blame you for this.
  • The Simpsons are going to be on for at least two more seasons bringing the grand total to 22. They’ll be 7 episodes shy of 500. Longevity rocks!
  • Kathy Griffin is getting $2 Million to write a book. Will you read it? I love KG but I’m not sure if the humor will translate.
  • Michael Cera finally manned up and agreed to be in the Arrested Development movie. I slept well for the first time in a long time last night.
  • Finding the remote really is awesome. The only thing better? Finding your cellphone in the couch.
  • Old people…they’re at it again. This time a 70-year-old man shot his TV after he couldn’t get his converter box to work. This will be the subject of the next Dish-TV commercial.
  • You can watch free CBS & Showtime shows on your iPhone now…as if you didn’t have enough awesome things to do with it already.
  • My favorite non-TV related link of the week: The Giant Scrabble Board. Add this to my Christmas list…or personal life goals.

So Amber Tamblyn is currently dating David Cross . Once you get past the May/December issue here, you’ll see that my new favorite “it” couple really is a match made in oddball romance heaven.

David Cross :
-Under rated TV show (Arrested Development)
-Denim shorts very important to his character (He was a never-nude on AD)

Amber Tamblyn:
-Under rated TV show (Joan of Arcadia)
-Denim pants very important to her character (She’s reprising her role as Tibby in Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants 2)

And there you have it. I’m happy for them. Funny hipsters belong together.

Let’s clear things up.

Amy Poehler is NOT going to star in The Office spin-off. Apparently she’s going to be on a different NBC show, similar to The Office (single-camera, maybe a mockumentary) but totally unrelated and set to debut in the spring. Poehler is having a baby this fall after all.

However, there is still going to be an Office spin-off and it’s still debuting after the Super Bowl. Poehler just won’t be in it.

Sad.

Maybe Will Arnett can still be in. Or anyone else from Arrested Development.

This is still a rumor but if it comes to fruition, consider it the best thing to happen to The Office since the Schrutebuck. It’s so exciting that I am writing it in a larger font.

Amy Poehler (SNL wonder-woman and comedy movie cash cow) may star in the new Office spin-off.

I know, I know, I am also having trouble containing my excitement. If she can find a role for her husband, (Will Arnett, better known as GOB from Arrested Development) then this show may end up improving on the original. Did I just write that? I think I did. And I am standing by it.

My enthusiasm level for the spin-off has now been elevated to orange. Please adjust your behavior and actions accordingly.
